Lung
Lung disease is very prominent in this country and treatment for it is very difficult. In terms of radiation treatment, an added complexity is the fact that most tumors are mobile and hard to target. With new treatment techniques it is possible to understand how the breathing motion will physically cause the tumor to move. However the difficulty still lies in hitting a moving target. Compensator-Based IMRT, which uses no moving parts, are more apt to deliver the dose to the moving target, and does it at a faster rate than other IMRT techniques. This means less time on the table for the patient.
In addition, Compensator-Based IMRT has been used to treat technically difficult large lung cancers such as mesothelioma tumors. Recently, work with stereotactic body radiosurgery, which is treatment of lung cancers with few number of treatment appointments, has shown improved outcomes, and the ideal treatment technique is Compensator-Based IMRT.
